A little bit about me.

“A metal head originally from Brisbane! Once a chef but now serving up cool, calm and collected UX on a plate.”

Hello! My name is Joel and I am a UX Designer based in Melbourne, Australia.

My Design journey started when I was working at a Real Estate Tech company in Brisbane where I found out about and ultimately found a passion for in UX Design. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of working as a UX Designer with a variety of clients during my time at Honest Fox Digital, who are an agency based in Cremorne, Melbourne.

My favourite part about being a designer is discovering problems with clients and users and then being able to build solutions for them through human-centred technology. It’s pretty cool to see your ideas, processes and decisions come to fruition through technology and having satisfied users!

In my spare time, I love going out to eat, hanging with my dog Albert and singing for a heavy band called Rare Words, as well as dealing with the constant up and downs of being an avid Tottenham Hotspur supporter

The tools I like to use:

Where I’ve worked

  • Product Designer at Realtair: 2023-Present

Realtair is a prop-tech product designed to make Real Estate agents lives around marketing, contract signing and digital auctions a whole lot easier. Being the first product designer to come into the company in Australia, it has been a solid task to try and bring some of the more legacy sides of the product in line with current design trends.

I’ve lead on projects such as designing an entire task management and automation solution for agents, and helped solve the Victorian state-specific nuances around how contracts are sent, signed and managed by agents and solicitors. Being the lead and most of the time, the sole designer on these features means that I have learnt to work with Design Systems, start building proper UI components from scratch and really being all hands-on-deck for the entire design process which has been amazing.

My time at Realtair has also seen me gain a lot more responsibility around managing a team of offshore web designers due to a restructure within the company, while still getting stuck in daily with interviews, journey mapping, designing and helping hand over to the development team.

  • Product Designer at Two Bulls/DEPT: 2022-2023

During my brief time at Two Bulls, I was a UX Artist/Product Designer on Translucia, a mobile-first metaverse game that was focussed on wellness, prosperity and inclusion.

My role was to create Wireframes and prototypes based off briefs provided by the product owners. I designed character customisation interfaces, education centres, messaging functionality and storage and inventory flows for the game.

Unfortunately, myself and the rest of the design team were made redundant from this role due to the project being stopped.

  • UX Designer at Honest Fox: 2021-2022

My first role as a UX Designer! My time at Honest Fox has seen me work with a variety of clients all the way from online gaming and visual effects schools through to finance companies, which has allowed me to learn and practice every single part of the design process while also learning skills in digital marketing and technology.

I’ve had the opportunity to take the lead on projects where I was running discovery workshops to build out personas, goals and user journey’s, building wireframes and refining them based off client feedback, as well as supporting my UX Director on large-scale projects.

I also had the opportunity to learn a lot about marketing and technology during my time at Honest Fox. Being a growth-driven agency, a huge part of our practice was to look at Conversion Rate Optimisation through a design lense, and identify how we can implement changes through content audits, Google Analytics and heatmapping.

The technology side also saw me working with platforms such as Hubspot, Craft CMS and Wordpress.

  • Customer Success Manager at Rexlabs: 2017-2021

Starting out at Rexlabs as a Sales Cadet, I progressed into the Customer Care Team which saw me promoted to the Customer Success Manager. During my time as a Customer Success Manager, I onboarded multiple real estate agencies onto the Rex Software CRM product and decreased the number of failed-onboarding clients through effective process improvements and project management. Another part of my role was to assist in managing a team of Customer Care team members, to help improve their SLA responses and troubleshooting with the Rexlabs products.

My time at Rexlabs is what led me to wanting to become a UX Designer after being exposed to the industry, and realising how transferrable my skills as a Customer Success Manager could be as a designer.

  • Chef de Partie at Sirromet Winery: 2013-2016

Sirromet is an award winning winery based in Mt Cotton, Queensland where I finished my Certificate III in Commercial Cookery, and progressed into a Chef de partie role (third in charge in the kitchen). During my time as a chef I managed a team of apprentices and Commis Chefs, prepared menu items for multiple dietry requirements and large-scale events and services.

Yes, this does mean that I can still cook up a pretty impressive feast, and I am always looking for a reason to cook for groups of friends!

“Joel has shown a fantastic work ethic and an ability to learn quickly. Whether it is a new tool (e.g Figma) or a UX technique he hasn't yet tried, he just jumps in and gives it a go, which I admire. He has also been an amazing culture fit and wherever he ends up next, they will be lucky. He has a bright future in the industry.”
